Monday, September 25, 2023

Opening Ceremony

18:00 – 20:00

Location: Coronation Hall of the Aachen Town Hall, Marketplace, 52062 Aachen

Event open to interested participants. No registration required.

The opening ceremony will kick off the AI Week program with welcoming speeches by the State Secretary at the Ministry for Culture & Science of the state NRW, Gonca Tuerkeli-Dehnert, the Mayor of Aachen, Sybille Keupen, the Rector and Chancellor of RWTH Aachen University, Ulrich Rüdiger and Manfred Nettekoven, the board of directors of the RWTH AI Center, and other national and international guests of honour.

Programming workshop for teens: Pocket AI

16:00 – 18:00

Location: Super C, Ford Saal, Templergraben 57, 52062 Aachen

Event is open for teenagers from 13 to 16 years old. There will be 2 sessions with the same content (16:00-16:45 and 17:00-17:45). Registration is required via Eventbrite

In this workshop, teenagers will learn how to develop a pedometer (counting steps) and an activity classifier on their own smartphone. No prior knowledge is required. This workshop will be delivered by MathWorks.

Digitization has already changed our working world, but will artificial intelligence accelerate it even more? Will people without AI skills even keep up? And will AI soon take over all our jobs? The RWTH is on its way to become one of Germany's leading universities in AI. Experts and pioneers are delivering world-class research in methodological AI. The strong application disciplines that the RWTH is known for are closely integrated and enable an application-specific development of methods and algorithms and a transformation of research into real-life applications.

All talks are devoted to show case the progress of AI research at RWTH, to connect experts in different fields, and to exchange knowledge to find synergies for future projects.

The evening program is devoted to the future of AI. In a panel discussion AI experts will discuss with representatives from the industry and the general public on the ethics of AI, its advancements/potentials/limitations, and future plans, with a particular focus on Germany and Europe.

Panel discussion: Future of AI in Germany, Europe and beyond

16:00 – 18:30

Location: Digital Church, Jülicherstraße 72a, 52070 Aachen

Event is open to all citizens and researchers. No registration is required.

The event will kick off with a poster session where young researchers from all over Germany will present their research in the field of AI (or related to AI). The researchers will be joined by Alexander von Humboldt AI professors from all over Germany. The audience is invited to view the posters and interact with the researchers and ask their questions to better understand the current research development in Artificial Intelligence.
The poster session will be followed by a panel discussion between AI experts and representatives from the industry and the general public to discuss the future of AI in Germany, Europe and beyond. This interactive session will discuss the ethical and social aspects, the concerns of the general public, and the chances and benefits for the industry and society.

WarGames (1983, Science Fiction, 114')

Location: Münchener Aula, RWTH Main Building, Templergraben 55, 52062 Aachen

Synopsis: High school student David Lightman (Matthew Broderick) unwittingly hacks into a military supercomputer while searching for new video games. After starting a game of Global Thermonuclear War, Lightman leads the supercomputer to activate the nation's nuclear arsenal in response to his simulated threat as the Soviet Union. Once the clueless hacker comes to his senses, Lightman, with help from his girlfriend (Ally Sheedy), must find a way to alert the authorities to stop the onset of World War III.
